The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in cooperation with TWAS and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) is organising  a workshop titled “Policy  and  Diplomacy  for  Scientists: Introduction  to  Responsible  Research  Practices  in  Chemical  and  Biochemical  Sciences”.

The workshop will be held at TWAS headquarters in Trieste, Italy, from 12-15 September 2017 and will accommodate a maximum of 25 participants, young scientists who have received their PhD within the past 10 years and are under the age of 40 years. Applications from both women and men are strongly encouraged (icb@opcw.org), and will be accepted until 1 August.

During the course, attendees will explore safety and security norms, standard practices and policy-diplomacy issues in the use of chemicals in chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology. They will also learn about the Chemical Weapons Convention and other international treaties and regulations. The event will be conducted in English.

With this initiative, the organizers intend to create tighter links and cooperation among scientists and policymakers, urging the adoption of shared and responsible practices in this field.

The correct use and control of chemicals is of the utmost importance, whether in developed or developing countries. Through lectures and interactive sessions,  the participants will acquire tools and expertise enabling them to have a positive impact in their home countries.
