The call for nominations opens today for the new TWAS-CAS Young Scientist Award for Frontier Science.

The award is the latest product of the long-standing partnership between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and TWAS. It will recognize scientists no older than 45 who are living and working in a developing country.

The recipient will receive USD10,000. The first edition, in 2020, will recognize achievements in the physical sciences, including physics and chemistry. In future years it will honour achievements in astronomy and cosmology, Earth science, mathematics and artificial intelligence, and life sciences.

The award is funded by the Chinese technology company Lenovo, a global leader in consumer, commercial, and enterprise technology that is the largest PC company in the world. It is currently funded for five years total.

CAS President and former TWAS President Bai Chunli played a central role in creating the award. The two academies have a close and enduring relationship that includes numerous projects, including the hosting of over a thousand PhD fellowships for developing world scientists in China since 2004.
