Aragão de Carvalho (MSc, 1976, Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), PhD Princeton U., 1980) is Professor of Physics at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)(1994 - ), a specialist in Quantum Field Theory and its applications. He is currently Director of Innovation and Technology at INMETRO, the Brazilian National Metrology Institute. Previously he was: Research Associate at CERN (1980-81); Research Associate of CNRS at the University of Paris XI, Orsay (1981-82); Assistant Professor (1982-88) and Associate Professor (1985-93) at PUC/RJ; President of the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) (2010); and Director-General of CNPEM (2011-14). He was awarded the Medal of the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit in 1998 and the Great Cross of the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit in 2005. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
