Jan, Distinguished National Professor (emeritus) at the University of Peshawar and Adviser COMSTECH Islamabad, obtained BSc Hons (Peshawar), MS (Oregon) and PhD (London) degrees. He carried out extensive geological investigations of the Himalayan region of Pakistan. His studies have been related mostly to geodynamic processes in collisional mountain belts and the make up of the crust of an intra-oceanic (Kohistan) island arc that became an Andean-type margin. He is author/editor of hundred papers and books, a fellow/member of several academies and professional bodies, including the Pak. Acad. of Sci. (PAS) and Islamic World Acad. of Sci. He has held several important positions nationally and internationally. Honours include gold medals from PAS, Distinguished Scientist of the Year awards (from Natl. Book Foundation and PAS), civil awards (HI, SI, TI), ISESCO science prize, and Honorary DSc from King's College London and University of Leicester.
