Born in Liechtenstein, naturalized Brazilian. Geologist/Paleontologist, Ph.D. from Columbia University (joint program-American Museum of Natural History, New York). Since 1997, at the Museu Nacional/UFRJ. Main research areas include paleobiodiversity and development of ancient ecosystems through deep time. Described +60 species, published +200 original studies (publications total +800). Advised +50 master, Ph.D. students and postdocs. Organized field activities to remote areas of Brazil, Iran, China, Chile and Antarctica. Headed several scientific meetings and is involved in communicating science through books, novels, documentaries, open talks and exhibitions, such as During the Time of the Dinosaurs (1999-landmark in Brazil), exhibitions in Japan and New York. Among awards and honors: World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize 2010 and Ordem Nacional do Mérito Centífico (Brazil, 2010). Elected to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and TWAS and honorary member of other organizations.
