Khatijah is currently the Dean of BioTech at Univ Putra Malaysia. Her research on Newcastle disease virus has won her many awards including the 2005 Carlos J Finlay Prize for microbiology by UNESCO and the National Young Scientist Award in 1990. She is a Fellow and Council member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the Islamic World Academy of Science (FIAS). She sits on the National Science Research Council and the National Bioethics Council. She is also active in local and international professional societies. In addition to being on the Board of Directors for A-Bio and GreenTech Malaysia, Khatijah also sits on the Board of Trustees for International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). In 2010, La Trobe University awarded her DSc (honoris causa).
