Paving the way for the future

Paving the way for the future

In a new short video, Ljupčo Jivan Gjorgjinski describes how science diplomacy is necessary to respond to recent scientific breakthroughs

In a new video released by TWAS, DiploFoundation Senior Fellow Ljupčo Jivan Gjorgjinski describes science and diplomacy as "the perfect coupling", necessary to address the enormous scientific breakthroughs that are occurring in the modern day.

Ljupčo Jivan Gjorgjinski was a guest speaker at the 10th AAAS-TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy. He is a senior fellow with DiploFoundation, focusing on the security and diplomatic aspects of frontier science and technology. He chaired the 2019 and 2020 United Nations Groups of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems. The GGE, under his leadership, adopted a report that is still among the most advanced international normative documents to focus on artificial intelligence. In 2018, he also chaired the Meeting of States Parties at the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.

For the 2023 edition of the course, TWAS and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) brought together 13 pairs of scientists and policymakers from across the world to Trieste, Italy, on 19-23 June. The aim of the course, launched in 2014 with key funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), is to ensure that the results of scientific research can be used in real-world policy decisions.
