Biodata
Nísia Trindade Lima holds a Master’s degree in Political Science (1989) and a PhD in Sociology (1997) from the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro, now the Institute of Social and Political Studies. Her career is rooted in the social sciences, with academic work focused on Brazilian social thought, the history of ideas in public health, the history of development in Brazil, and the history of the social sciences in health. She is the author of Um Sertão Chamado Brasil, a book based on her award-winning doctoral thesis.
She is an Emeritus Researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz, and a faculty member of the Graduate Program in the History of Sciences and Health. She is also a collaborating professor in the Graduate Program in Sociology at IESP/UERJ and an Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
She served as Brazil’s Minister of Health from January 2023 to March 2025. During her tenure, she led the institutional rebuilding of the Brazilian Unified Health System in the post-pandemic period and helped reposition Brazil as a leading actor in global health.
