Sudanese mathematician Ibrahim Eltayeb, a TWAS Fellow since 1996, passed away on 15 September 2025. An esteemed scientist, he held prominent academic and scientific roles. He earned his PhD in 1972 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. Then he served as a professor of applied mathematics at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat, Oman, where he also played a foundational role as the editor-in-chief and chairman of the editorial board of the SQU Journal for Science.
Prior to his tenure in Oman, Eltayeb held academic positions at the University of Khartoum, where he served as lecturer, professor, head of the Department of Mathematics, and later as dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences.
His contributions to geophysics and applied mathematics were recognized through his involvement with the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, where he served in the executive committee (1991–1999), and later chaired the Scientific Division I (1999–2003).
Eltayeb's scientific excellence earned him prestigious membership: he was elected fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (1986), the Royal Astronomical Society of London (1988), and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2012). His research achievements were honoured with the TWAS Mathematics Prize in 1995 and the COMSTECH Mathematics Prize in 2007.
