Global Research Council

The Global Research Council (GRC) is comprised of the heads of science and engineering funding agencies from around the world. The Council promotes best practices for high-quality collaboration among funding agencies worldwide. TWAS is represented on the Governing Board, and in 2012, it helped to organize a key regional conference in Ethiopia.

The Council's long-term goal is to foster research and collaboration across continents to benefit both rich and poor nations. In 2012, almost 50 research council leaders – including TWAS fellows Thirumalachari Ramasami of the Indian Department of Science and Technology and Glaucius Oliva of the Brazilian research council – endorsed a high-level statement of principles and initiated by the Council. Jörg Schneider, head of a major TWAS partner, the Division of International Affairs of the German Research Foundation, also endorsed the statement.

The statement of principles provides a framework for greater cooperation between researchers of different nations, and for communicating international standards for science funding agencies. It also provides a forum for regular meetings of GRC leaders, who can explore mechanisms to support international science and the global research community.
