Obituary: Lê Dũng Tráng (1947-2025)

TWAS Fellow Lê Dũng Tráng was a Vietnamese mathematician who opened new opportunities for Viet Nam to connect with the global scientific community

Vietnamese mathematician Lê Dũng Tráng, a TWAS Fellow since 1993, was an emeritus professor at the University of Aix–Marseille, France. He passed away on 19 November 2025, at the age of 78. Born in Saigon, Viet Nam, in 1947, he pursued his studies at Lycée Voltaire, Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and Paris University.

Over the course of his career, he held relevant academic positions: he served as an assistant in the Faculty of Sciences at Paris University, then was vice-chairman and chairman of the Mathematics Department at the University of Paris 7. He also taught at the Polytechnic University of Paris and the University of Marseille I. From 2002 to 2009, he headed the mathematics group at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (ICTP), Italy.

Lê Dũng Tráng played a key role in helping Viet Nam join the International Mathematical Union in 1974, opening new opportunities for the country to connect with the global scientific community. His research focused primarily on singularity theory in geometry and Hodge theory. He served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Mathematics, Journal of Singularities, and Acta Mathematica Vietnamica. In recognition of his significant contributions to mathematics, he was awarded the Prix d’Aumale by the French Academy, in 1990.
