Leading Iraqi scientist Dakhil Hassan Jerew, elected to TWAS in 2006, passed away on 20 July 2025. He was the former president of the University of Basrah; University of Technology, Iraq; and Iraqi Academy of Sciences. Under his tenure, the institutions witnessed significant development in their infrastructure and academic programmes.

Jerew served as a professor of control systems engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, Iraq. He was also an advisor for technical education and programmes development with the Ministry of Manpower, Sultanate of Oman.
He authored 40 books and was a well-known writer among the Iraqi and Omani media. He was a member of the Arabian Science Academy, Arab Academy of Damascus, Iraqi Society of Engineers, and won the state prize, science medal, science merit in Iraq, and the Gdansk Technical University Medal of Poland. In 2005, he was named one of the Arab pioneers in electronic engineering.
