
Professor Emeritus Ram Prakash Bambah, elected to TWAS in 1993, passed away on 26 May 2025. Bambah was a distinguished mathematician renowned for his work in number theory, geometry of numbers, and packing and covering. He earned his master’s degree from Panjab University (PU), Lahore, and his PhD (in as little as two years) and doctorate degrees from St. John’s College, Cambridge.
His academic career included positions at Cambridge, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and Ohio State University. He was vice-chancellor of PU from 1985 to 1991, and served as president of the Indian Mathematical Society and vice-president of the Indian National Science Academy.
Bambah was the recipient of numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Aryabhatta Medal awarded by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Ramanujan Medals awarded by the Indian Science Congress Association and INSA, and the Meghnad Saha Award presented by the University Grants Commission of India. He was also a fellow of India’s three national science academies: the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences, India.
