Indian engineer Budaraju Srinivasa Murty, elected to TWAS in 2019 and the current director of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), was named president of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), headquartered in Kolkata, India, for the 2025–26 term.
He took office on 1 August, succeeding Professor Sajjan Jindal, chairman and managing director of the Indian company JSW.
Murty is a professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras. His academic journey in science began with a diploma in metallurgy in 1983, then he earned his bachelor of engineering from the Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (today the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology) in Nagpur, and obtained his master’s degree and PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Since 2011, he has served as an adjunct professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. Since 2016, he has been an associate faculty member in the School of Engineering, University of British Columbia, both in Canada. He is committed to enhance engagement with young professionals and create dynamic platforms for knowledge sharing, technological dissemination, and cross-sector collaboration.
A Fellow of the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (2013), the Indian National Science Academy (2013), the Indian Academy of Sciences (2008), the National Academy of Sciences (2008), and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2007), his career is filled with accolades. They include the JC Bose Fellowship award (2018-2023), honorary doctorate from Deakin University, Australia (2017), Lifetime Achievement Award of IIT Madras (2016), Distinguished Alumnus Award of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (2010), and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (2007).
