TWAS participates in major new science event in Trieste

Trieste, in northern Italy, is where TWAS has its headquarters - and this weekend, for the first time, the city is home to an ambitious new event called 'Trieste Next' which aims to bring together the many and diverse scientific institutions clustered throughout Trieste and its hinterland.

Trieste Next’ has been conceived of, essentially, as a kind of public science 'laboratory' where each year, a different theme will be put under the microscope.

TWAS has been invited to participate in a series of presentations, performances and discussions which centre on the theme of 'Save the Food' and which aim to intrigue and involve the audience.

Trieste has been branding itself for some time - and very successfully - as an international capital of science and innovation. With more than 30 research institutes, including two universities, the city has an unusually high density of researchers (more than 35 researchers per every 1,000 employees compared to a European average of less than six). Given its strategic position in the centre of Europe, Trieste is well placed to become a global centre of excellence in science and innovation, as well as aiming to develop very close links with industry.

TWAS’s involvement in ‘Trieste Next includes:

•    On Friday 28 September, at 09:00 in Piazza Unità (Spazio Libri) TWAS will present the first book in a new TWAS series of science books for high school students. The book on 'Biodiversity' is a translation and re-writing of the 'Excellence in Science' series of books published by TWAS, which focused on different specialist science centres in developing countries. This new series will amalgamate some of the centres that specialize in the same scientific field, and re-present the material in a way that is appropriate for Italian high school students. These Italian editions will be published in collaboration with 'Scienza Express'.

•    On Saturday 29 September, at 15:00 at the Scuola Interpreti (Via Filzi 14) there will be a round table on climate change and its impact on developing countries. This event has been organized in collaboration with TWAS and we have invited climate specialist Jaroslaw Mysiak (FEEM, Venice, and partner in the EU-funded CATALYST project) to present his research in the area, and Lidia Brito (Director, Division of Science Policy and Sustainable Development, UNESCO) will attend.

•    On Sunday 30 September at 18:00 at the Teatro Verdi, the closing event will be based on the theme of 'Water' - in preparation for the 2013 edition of 'Trieste Next'. Again, TWAS invited specialist, Nick Davidson, of the DSG Ramsar Convention who will talk about 'the importance of wetlands in a changing world'.
