TWAS signs Memorandum of Understanding with Iraq

Mohamed H.A. Hassan, executive director of TWAS, and A.M. Taleb, cultural advisor from the the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Iraq (MOHESR), signed a memorandum of understanding on 1 October 2009.

TWAS signs Memorandum of Understanding with IraqThe Memorandum recognizes the importance of strengthening cooperation between the institutions in order to advance development of the natural sciences for the benefit of Iraqi society. More specifically, TWAS and MOHESR have agreed to promote scientific research through conferences; support brief visits of research students and experts to international research centres and institutes; and give financial support to projects that seek to increase contact between Iraq and the world's scientific community. TWAS will provide a number of fellowships through the TWAS Fellowships for Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Training programme and the Academy's Scheme of Prizes for Young Scientists will be implemented by MOHESR. The Ministry will use its offices in Iraq to disseminate information and opportunities that TWAS and the international scientific community can offer to Iraqi scientists. Both institutions hope that initiating such cooperative efforts will help to build a more sustainable and stable future for the people of Iraq.
