Hong is the head of (Hong Tao) Acadamician’s Lab, Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention, China CDC; director, Inst. of Biology and Biotech., Beijing Jiaotong University; professor, Peking Union Medical College; and member, Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1995. His contributions include: 1) discovery of the Adult Diarrhoea Rotavirus (ADRV), which has been genetically characterized and classified to be the unique human group B rotavirus; 2) discovery of the morphology and identification of Hantavirus; and 3) pioneering study on Prion diseases in China. His 18 awards include the Meritous Service Award and WHO National Nature Science Awards. His memberships include: Chinese Society of Microbiology; Chinese Medical Association; American Society of Virology; Intl. Soc. of Electron Microscopy; and president, Public Health and Medicine, Pacific Science Association.
