Panza is former prof. of seismology Trieste Univ. and head of group at ICTP. His multidisciplinary scientific activity deals with: integrated analysis of structure and dynamics of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system; integrated approach to modeling of seismic waves; earthquake-prone lineaments and premonitory seismicity patterns. He received the Beno Gutenberg medal, laurea (h.c.) in physics (Bucharest Univ.), medal of honor from the Central European Initiative and the Commemorative Medal of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. He is honorary professor, Inst. of Geophysics (CEA Beijing); honorary professor, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) and elected member of: Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Academia Europaea, RAS Moscow and Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze detta dei XL. In 2009 he delivered the Lectio Magistralis at the opening ceremony of the Academic year of Trieste Univ., at the presence of the President of the Chamber of Deputies. Knight of The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for outstanding scientific achievements.
