Varshney is a Global Research Program Director, Genetic Gains at ICRISAT. He is also Winthrop Research Professor (Plant Biology) at The University of Western Australia. In his dual appointment, he also served CGIAR Generation Challenge Program (hosted by CIMMYT) as Theme Leader for six years. Before joining ICRISAT, he worked at IPK-Gatersleben, Germany as a Research Scientist for five years. He is a leader in applied genomics, genomics-assisted breeding and translational genomics for agriculture. He has genome sequences of 8 crops including pigeonpea, chickpea, peanut and pearl millet and several molecular breeding products in chickpea, peanut and pigeonpea to his credit. Varshney is an Elected Fellow/Member/Academician of Leopoldina-German Natl. Acad. of Sciences, Crop Science Soc. of America, American Assoc. for the Advancement of Science as well as leading science academies of India (e.g. INSA, NASI, NAAS) and recipient of several awards including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award from Govt. of India among others.
