Dattagupta, a condensed matter theorist, specializes in nonequilibrium phenomena and quantum dissipative systems. He has written 250+ papers in international journals and authored 4 books: (i) Relaxation Phenomena in Condensed Matter, Academic Press, 1987; (ii) Dissipative Effects in Condensed Matter (coauthor: Sanjay Puri), Springer-Verlag, 2004; (iii) A Paradigm Called Magnetism, World Scientific Press, 2008 and (iv) Diffusion–Formalism and Application, Taylor & Francis, 2013. He is a Fellow of all three science academies of India: Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Science and National Academy of Science. He has served as Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Director, S. N. Bose National Center of Basic Sciences; Founding Director, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata; and Vice-Chancellor, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Among his major recognitions are Young Scientist and C. V. Raman Medals (Indian National Science Academy), J. C. Bose Fellowship (Government of India), Associateship and Senior Associateship of ICTP, Trieste, Alexander Humboldt Fellowship and Visiting Associateship of Cambridge University.
