The S4D4C project aims to support current and future European science diplomacy for the benefit of European capacities, EU foreign policy goals, and especially the development of solutions for global challenges. This includes the EU's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which have important science, technology and innovation components.

European Science Diplomacy Online Course will introduce you to the field of science diplomacy. The course benefits from a theoretical as well as a practical dimension, as it gives you information about the conceptual framing of science diplomacy, the variety of stakeholders and networks involved, including a whole module focused on the European Union, different implementation strategies, skills needed in the field of science diplomacy and some case studies of science diplomacy in practice. After sucessfully completing the course, you will be able to download an offfcial certificate. Important to know as well: The course is 100% free of charge.
The policy report is divided into three sections:
Where do we want to be? The EU science diplomacy vision, mission and principles for addressing global challenges, which are inspired by the Madrid Declaration on Science Diplomacy.
Where are we? Main stoppers, warnings and drivers for addressing global challenges within each of the systems of science, diplomacy, and science diplomacy.
How will we get there? The systemic change towards EU science diplomacy for addressing global challenges, that includes a set of policy recommendations focused on an integrative transformation and that takes into account three transversal processes (learning system, integrative leadership and change of culture) in five key spheres (knowledge, governance with no silos, alliances, institutions, and people).
S4D4C organised two workshops on science diplomacy in 2019: (1) at The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Trieste from 21-23 October 2019 and (2) at the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies (DA) in Vienna from 25-27 November 2019. The S4D4C consortium prepared two different programmes designed with a slightly different target group in mind: the workshop at TWAS (Trieste) was anticipated to have a higher ratio of scientists while the one at DA (Vienna) was directed to a more diplomatic audience.
The goal of both workshops was to provide participants with the opportunity to understand the state-of-the-art of science diplomacy in Europe, provide them with the necessary skills to work in science diplomacy, as well as showcase some examples e.g. through panel discussions and research-based case studies developed by the consortium. The workshops were designed to be interactive, present different types of sessions, and provide participants with time and opportunity to network and exchange work related experiences.
The “Madrid Declaration on Science Diplomacy” aims to foster agreement and raise awareness about the need to strengthen science diplomacy strategies and practices world-wide for the support of universal scientific and democratic values. These strategies are required to suitably include science and technology as key dimensions of foreign policy and international relationships at different political levels. This confluence of interests must be in the benefit of both the scientific endeavor as well as legitimate broader political and societal objectives.
