Call is open for multiple research grants

Programmes from TWAS focus on Africa and countries lagging in science-and-technology

Several grants from TWAS programmes are currently seeking applications from enterprising developing world scientists who need support to buy equipment, supplies, and other needs.

Applications for TWAS Research Grants, supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), are due by 3 April 2025. They are for researchers based in TWAS-identified science-and-technology lagging countries (STLCs), and come in four varieties:

  • Grants for Individuals: Provides up to US$30,000 for individual scientists in the developing world, US$20,000 of which may be spent on equipment and consumable supplies. The remainder may be used for scientific conference participation and open access publishing fees.
  • Grants for Research Groups: Provides up to US$54,000 for research groups in the developing world, US$40,000 of which may be spent on equipment and consumable supplies. The remainder may be used for scientific conference participation, open access publishing fees, or support for master’s students. This is the only category of grants that offers support for master’s students.
  • Collaborative Grants for Interdisciplinary Research: Provides up to US$35,000 to each of two scientists (US$70,000 total), one male and one female, and at least one from an LDC, who will work together to conduct interdisciplinary research between two different scientific fields. Up to US$30,000 of each award is designated for equipment and consumable supplies, and the remainder may be spent on scientific conference participation and open access publishing fees.
  • Grants for Maintenance: Provides past grantees in one of the STLCs with US$3,000 for upkeep and repair of laboratory equipment they purchased with their previous grant.

TWAS also administers the Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI), supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). They are for researchers based in this list of African countries, with a focus on early career researchers who have obtained their PhD abroad and will work in an academic position in their home country. Applications are due by 27 March 2025.
