Jaqueline Mesquita, a Brazilian mathematician and an alumna of the TWAS Young Affiliate programme, is one of the five female researchers to receive the ‘Science, She Says!’ award.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation established the prize in 2022 to acknowledge women in science who have distinguished themselves in their country of origin. The ‘Science, She Says!’ award includes a medal and a diploma signed by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs (MAECI), His Excellency Antonio Tajani.
"I would like to thank the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for this prize and for the recognition," Mesquita said. "This award is very important for my career, as it recognizes the science I am investigating and encourages scientific collaboration with the Italian mathematics community."
She is also a member of the current Executive Board of the TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN), representing Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Partner (TWAS-LACREP). TYAN was launched in 2016 to recognize the most accomplished young scientists in various regions of the developing world.
Mesquita received the award for her innovative discoveries in the field of differential equations. For the achievements obtained early in her career, she had already won the International Bernd-Aulbach Prize for Students in 2012, awarded by the International Society of Difference Equations. In 2018, she was elected as a TWAS Young Affiliate and admitted to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 2019, she won the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards, established to acknowledge the talent and deep commitment to science and an outstanding career.
Now, she can add another prestigious award to her shelf. However, she pointed out: "This award is important because it gives a lot of visibility to the science that is produced in Brazil, especially in pure mathematics, which is basic science."
