On 11 February 2026, over 300 women scientists from across Central Asia convened in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for SheSCIENCE 2026, a regional forum held celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The event brought together government leaders, researchers, and representatives of academia and international organizations. Participants presented cutting‑edge research in fields such as biotechnology, public health, climate resilience, artificial intelligence, engineering, and fundamental sciences.
“By strengthening networks among women scientists, supporting research excellence, and aligning our priorities, we are investing in sustainable development, innovation, and the future competitiveness of Central Asia,” said TWAS Fellow Shahlo Turdikulova.
TWAS Executive Director Marcelo Knobel and TWAS Vice-President for the Arab Region, Sabah AlMomin joined the event to discuss the Academy’s role in strengthening opportunities for women in STEM across the region and around the world.
“It was inspiring to meet so many talented women scientists, to share the opportunities TWAS offers, and to witness how Uzbekistan’s vision is fostering a stronger and more inclusive regional research landscape,” said Knobel.
“As TWAS Vice-President, I am continually inspired by the remarkable contributions of women scientists across the developing world,” noted AlMomin. “Central Asia is rising as a dynamic scientific hub, and women researchers are essential to this transformation. At TWAS, we believe excellence in science knows no gender. We remain committed to strengthening the visibility of women across the globe, especially in developing countries.”
