The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and TWAS have announced the theme of the 17th TWAS General Conference: ‘Building a Sustainable Future: The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation for Global Development’.

The event will take place at the Windsor Barra Convention Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 29 September to 2 October 2025, and will be organized in partnership by BAS and TWAS.

“Our aim is to highlight scientific excellence in the developing world and enhance ties between scientists globally, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Helena Nader, President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

“This world-class gathering will focus on the theme of science, technology, and innovation—or STI—for the achievement of the United Nation’s Agenda 2030, addressing both gaps and opportunities in these areas for the global South,” added TWAS President Quarraisha Abdool Karim.

The conference represents an opportunity for scientists from the global South across many stages of their careers to contribute to global development through STI. TWAS General Conferences are renowned for showcasing scientific excellence in the developing world. They convene a diverse range of participants—from TWAS Fellows and prize winners to government science ministers and presidents of universities and science academies. The conference will feature panels of high-level experts, talks on science and sustainable development, and ceremonies presenting science awards and welcoming new TWAS Fellows into the Academy.

Additionally, the event will include the 32nd TWAS General Meeting, a closed-door session where TWAS Fellows and Young Affiliates will discuss Academy matters.
