Lee received his B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University in 1959 and Doctorate from UC Berkeley in 1965. After working with Professor Mahan at Berkeley and Professor Herschbach at Harvard as a post-doctoral fellow, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago in 1968. He returned to Berkeley as Professor of Chemistry in 1974. He was University Professor and Principal Investigator at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, UC Berkeley, before he returned to Taiwan to serve as the President of Academia Sinica from 1994 to 2006, the highest ranking academic institution in Taiwan. He was elected President of the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 2008 and served from 2011 to 2014. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Doctor Honoris Causa from 41 universities throughout the world.

Lin is research professor in mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and dean of the Science Faculty at Beijing University of Aero/Astronautics. He was previously assistant professor from 1956-59, lecturer from 1960-78 and associate professor from 1979-82 at CAS. He is a prominent figure in numerical analysis in China. He is well-known for his theory of extrapolation of finite and boundary element solutions of partial differential equations. His awards include: First Place Award of Natural Science Prize, CAS; expert at national level with Outstanding Contributions; the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation; and the B. Bolzano Gold Medal for Merits in the field of mathematical sciences. His membership includes: CAS; standing committee, CAS, the Chinese Mathematical Society and the SIAM Fellow.

Mu (Phd 1985, Fudan U.) is an academician and researcher, working in the Key Laboratory of Ocean Circulation and Waves (KLOCW) – Inst. of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS). He worked as a postdoctorate researcher at Inst. of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). His main contributions are on predictability of weather and climate and stability of geophysical fluid motions. He proposed and applied a new method called CNOP to study predictability, ensemble forecast and adaptive observations of ENSO, thermolhaline circulation of oceans, tropical cyclone, blockings, Kuroshio etc. He established a series of nonlinear stability criteria of atmospheric and oceanic motions. He is a member of CAS (2007); First Class Prize of Nature Scientific Award, CAS (2001); Natl.-wide Excellent Post Doc, Ministry of Personnel (2005); and Ho Leung Ho Lee Sc. and Tech. Prize (2010).

Hong is the head of (Hong Tao) Acadamician’s Lab, Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention, China CDC; director, Inst. of Biology and Biotech., Beijing Jiaotong University; professor, Peking Union Medical College; and member, Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1995. His contributions include: 1) discovery of the Adult Diarrhoea Rotavirus (ADRV), which has been genetically characterized and classified to be the unique human group B rotavirus; 2) discovery of the morphology and identification of Hantavirus; and 3) pioneering study on Prion diseases in China. His 18 awards include the Meritous Service Award and WHO National Nature Science Awards. His memberships include: Chinese Society of Microbiology; Chinese Medical Association; American Society of Virology; Intl. Soc. of Electron Microscopy; and president, Public Health and Medicine, Pacific Science Association.

Phan is professor at the International University, Vietnam National University of Hochiminh City (HCMIU) and vice president of the Vietnam Mathematical Society. He obtained his PhD in 1978 and DSc in 1988 at the Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences. He was the founder-president of HCMIU. He is also professor-head of Department of Optimization and System Theory at the University of Science of Hochiminh City, adjunct professor at the University of Ballarat, Australia, vice president of the Mathematical Council of the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development, member of the Scientific Council of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) and the National Council for Mathematics Professorship. He is an associate editor of a number of international mathematical journals.

Che (PhD, 1982) is Dr. Hui Wai Haan Chair of Chemistry, U. of Hong Kong. He sits on the internatl. edit. adv. board of Chemistry - A European Journal (2001-), Chemistry - An Asian Journal (2006-), Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry (2009-), ChemCatChem (2009-), ChemPlusChem (2011-), Chemical Science (2010-), Inorganic Chemistry (2013-), and Chemical Communications (2013-). He is a member of the Chin. Acad. of Scs. and has won the First Class Prize, State Natural Science Award of China, the Natl. Outstanding Young Scholar Award, the Prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundn. for Sci. and Techn. Progress in China, TWAS Prize in Chem., the Fedn. of Asian Chem. Societies Foundn. Lectureship Award, and the 2013 Royal Soc. Chem. Centenary Prize. He was elected For. Assoc., US Natl. Acad. of Sci., in 2013. With more than 800 publications and an H-index of 88 he is a ISI Highly Cited Researcher.

Liao (PhD, Tokyo) is chair prof., Natl. Taiwan Ocean U. and Natl. Pingtung U. of Sci. and Techn., as well as vis. dist. chair, Natl. Cheng Kung U. He returned to Taiwan (1968) as res. fellow, Rockefeller Fndn., then served as dir., Tungkang Marine Lab. (1969-87), dir. gen., Taiwan Fisheries Res. Inst. (1987-02), Pres., Asian Fisheries Soc. (1998-2001) and chairman., Fisheries Soc. of Taiwan (2005-08). His honours include: Outst. Res. Awds., Natl. Sci. Coun., Taiwan (1986-95); Academic Awd., Min. of Edu., Taiwan (1987); Achvmnt. Phu is professor at the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. He obtained his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1983 and Habilitation (Dr. sc. nat.) in 1987 at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He was awarded as Werner Romberg Distinguished Guest Professor of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences, University of Heidelberg, Germany in 2008. He is Corresponding Member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2004 and Corresponding Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2010.

Lu is a Chair Professor of Xiamen Uni., former Co-Director, Res. Center for Eco-Environmental Scs., Chinese Acad. of Scs.. He is a foreign member of Academia Europaea, and Russian Academy of Sciences; Fellow of Int. Sci Coucil; 10-Member Group of UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism for SDGs; Pres., Pacific Science Association; Past Pres., Scientific Committee on Problems of the Env. (SCOPE); Sc. Advisor, IUCN; UNEP Intl. Resource Panel member; and was a member of ICSU Committee on Scientific Planning and Review.
