Sida's relationship with TWAS began in 1991, and since then, the Agency has grown to be an essential supporter of the Academy's work. For over three decades, Sida has been the driving force behind the success of the TWAS Research Grants Programme, providing both valuable input on the programme’s development and vital financial support. These grants have allowed individual scientists and research groups in science- and technology-lagging countries identified by TWAS to invest in equipment, publishing and training of early-career researchers.
In 2022, the TWAS Research Grants programme expanded to include two additional grants: TWAS-Sida Collaborative Research Grants, and TWAS-Sida Maintenance Grants. A special 2022 edition of the TWAS Newsletter is also focused on Sida-supported grants, detailing the success of the programme over time.
Also in 2022, Sida agreed to fund a new TWAS Fellowship programme: the PhD Scholarships for Climate Research for Students from Least Developed Countries (LDCs). These scholarships were established to broaden the base of climate research expertise in LDCs.
Sida also provides essential support to the Academy’s five regional partners and its science diplomacy programme.
